You are using Windows 7 Professional<\/span><\/h2>\n<h2 style=\"clear: both;, Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-weight: normal;line-height: 1.25;font-size: 19.9822px;margin-top: 0px;margin-bottom: 0px\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.538em;font-size: 14px\"><span>For purposes of this article, we will assume the version is Windows 7 Professional. The only noticeable difference in the Home edition is that the Pro version of the &ldquo;User Manager&rdquo; is not directly available&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.538em;font-size: 14px\"><span>in the Home edition so,<\/span><em><span>&nbsp;in Home edition, you will need to go to Control Panel, click on &ldquo;Users&rdquo; and rename the user from there.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"clear: both;, Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-weight: normal;line-height: 1.25;font-size: 22px;margin-top: 0px;margin-bottom: 0px\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px\">2. The user to be renamed (and related folder) is named &ldquo;owner.&rdquo;<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"clear: both;, Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-weight: normal;line-height: 1.25;font-size: 23.1px;margin-top: 0px;margin-bottom: 0px\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px\">3. The desired new (target) user\/folder name for this example is &ldquo;tjones&rdquo;<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"clear: both;, Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-weight: normal;line-height: 1.25;font-size: 19.9822px;margin-top: 0px;margin-bottom: 0px\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px\">4. The temporary admin account&nbsp; to be used will be called &ldquo;temp.&rdquo;<\/span><br \/>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n<h1>Steps<\/h1>\n<p style=\", Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 12.1104px;line-height: 16.9546px\"><span style=\"font-size: large;line-height: 25px\">1. First, reboot into safe mode.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\", Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 12.1104px;line-height: 13.5pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px\">Click Start, point to the &ldquo;right-arrow&rdquo; symbol next to &ldquo;Shutdown,&rdquo; then choose &ldquo;Restart&rdquo;. During restart, press the &ldquo;F8&rdquo; key intermittently, until you see the startup menu selection for booting into various modes. Choose the the option to &ldquo;Start in Safe Mode.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\", Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 12.1104px;line-height: 16.9546px\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px\">2. Log into &quot;safe mode&quot; as a privileged user<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px\"><span>Log into safe mode in the same manner as when you log into &quot;normal mode,&rdquo; as a privileged user. For this example, we can assume that you log in as &quot;owner.&quot;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px\">3. Create a new temporary user with administrator privileges.<\/span><span style=\", Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 12.1104px;line-height: 16.9546px\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px\"><span>This account is used to perform the necessary maintenance against the computer account. This account is a temporary account and can be named along those lines. For this example, we create an account name &ldquo;temp&rdquo; and we use a password of &quot;Temp@pass1.&quot;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px\">&nbsp; a. Add the &quot;temp&quot; user; from the command prompt, type &quot;net user \/add temp Temp@pass1&quot; and press &quot;Enter.&quot;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 14px\">&nbsp; b. Add the &ldquo;temp&rdquo; user to the &ldquo;administrators&rdquo; group<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14px\">; type: &quot;net localgroup administrators temp \/add<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14px\">&quot; and press Enter<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\", Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 12.1104px;line-height: 13.5pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px\">4. Log out of the current user account.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\", Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 12.1104px;line-height: 13.5pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px\">5. Log into &quot;safe mode&quot; as the new temporary admin user (&quot;temp&quot;).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"clear: both;, Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-weight: normal;line-height: 1.25;font-size: 23.1px;margin-top: 0px;margin-bottom: 0px\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px\">6. Rename the existing (original) user folder to the desired new folder name.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px\">&nbsp;&nbsp; a. Login as the new administrator account that you created earlier (&quot;temp,&quot; in this case).<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14px\">b. Browse to the &ldquo;c:\\users&rdquo; folder.<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px\"><span>c. Change the &quot;ProfileImagePath&quot; registry key to match the newly-renamed user.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\", Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size: 10pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px\"><span>From command prompt, type &ldquo;regedit&rdquo; and press Enter.&nbsp;Next,&nbsp;navigate to the following registry key<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14px\"><em>:<\/em><\/span><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 14px\"><em><span>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows NT\\CurrentVersion\\ProfileList<\/span><\/em><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px\"><span>Find the Profile SID associated with the user you wish to change (&ldquo;owner,&rdquo; in this case) by doing a &quot;Find&quot; within the registry editor; or simply browse through the keys within the &quot;ProfileList&quot; key, until you find the one with &quot;ProfileImagePath&quot; of&nbsp;&quot;c:\\Users\\owner&quot; (in this case). Once found, double-click that ProfileImagePath key and change&nbsp;it to &quot;c:\\Users\\tjones&rdquo; (in this case), and click &quot;Ok&quot;.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/social.technet.microsoft.com\/wiki\/cfs-file.ashx\/__key\/communityserver-wikis-components-files\/00-00-00-00-05\/4278.image012.png\" style=\"cursor: pointer\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\" \" src=\"http:\/\/social.technet.microsoft.com\/wiki\/resized-image.ashx\/__size\/550x0\/__key\/communityserver-wikis-components-files\/00-00-00-00-05\/4278.image012.png\" style=\"overflow: hidden;max-width: 100%;border-style: solid;height: auto !important\" \/><\/a><\/span><br \/>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"clear: both;, Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-weight: normal;line-height: 1.25;font-size: 23.1px;margin-top: 0px;margin-bottom: 0px\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px\">9. Reboot into &quot;normal mode (let the computer reboot, without choosing any options)<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp; b. Login with your newly-renamed user (&quot;tjones.&quot;)<br \/>&nbsp;&nbsp; c.
