A WordPress Multisite instance in Amazon Lightsail is designed to use multiple domains, or subdomains, for each blog site that you create within that instance. In this guide, we\u2019ll show you how to add a blog site as a subdomain of your WordPress Multisite instance. For example, if your main blog\u2019s primary domain is\u00a0example.com<\/code>, you can create new blog sites that use the\u00a0earth.example.com<\/code>\u00a0and\u00a0moon.example.com<\/code>\u00a0subdomains on the same instance.<\/p>\n

Prerequisites<\/h2>\n

Complete the following prerequisites in the order shown:<\/p>\n

    Create a WordPress Multisite instance in Lightsail. For more information, see\u00a0Create an Amazon Lightsail instance<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  2. \n

    Create a static IP and attach it to your WordPress Multisite instance in Lightsail. For more information, see\u00a0Create a static IP and attach it to an instance in Amazon Lightsail<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  3. \n

    Add your domain to Lightsail by creating a DNS zone, then point it to the static IP that you attached to your WordPress Multisite instance. For more information, see\u00a0Creating a DNS zone to manage your domain\u2019s DNS records in Amazon Lightsail<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  4. \n

    Define the primary domain for your WordPress Multisite instance in Lightsail. For more information, see\u00a0Define the primary domain for your WordPress Multisite instance in Amazon Lightsail<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Add a blog as a subdomain to your WordPress Multisite instance<\/h2>\n

    Complete these steps to create new blogs on your WordPress Multisite instance that use a subdomain of your main blog\u2019s primary domain.<\/p>\n

    You must complete step 4 listed in the prerequisites section of this guide before following these steps.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

      Sign in to the administration dashboard of your WordPress Multisite instance.<\/p>\n

      Choose\u00a0My Sites<\/span>, then\u00a0Network Admin<\/span>, and\u00a0Sites<\/span>\u00a0in the top navigation pane.<\/p>\n

      Choose\u00a0Add New<\/span>\u00a0to add a new blog site.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

      Enter a site address, which is the subdomain that will be used for the new blog site.<\/p>\n

      Enter a site title, select a site language, and enter an admin email.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

      Choose\u00a0Add Site<\/span>.<\/p>\n

      At this point, the new blog site has been created in your WordPress Multisite instance, but the subdomain is not yet configured to route to the new blog site. Continue to the next step to add an address record (A record) to your domain\u2019s DNS zone.<\/p>\n

      Complete these steps to point the subdomain for your new blog site to your WordPress Multisite instance. You must perform these steps for every blog site that you create on your WordPress Multisite instance.<\/p>\n

      For demonstration purposes, we\u2019ll use the Lightsail DNS zone. However, the steps may be similar for other DNS zones typically hosted by domain registrars.<\/p>\n

        Sign in to the\u00a0Lightsail console<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

      2. \n

        On the Lightsail home page, choose the\u00a0Domains & DNS<\/span>\u00a0tab.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

      3. \n

        Under the\u00a0DNS zones<\/span>\u00a0section of the page, choose the DNS zone for the domain that you defined as the primary domain for your WordPress Multisite instance.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

      4. \n

        In the DNS zone editor, choose the\u00a0DNS records<\/span>\u00a0tab. Then, choose Add record.<\/p>\n

        Choose\u00a0A record<\/span>\u00a0in the record type drop-down menu.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

        In the\u00a0Record name<\/span>\u00a0text box, enter the subdomain specified as the site address when creating the new blog site on your WordPress Multisite instance.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

        In the\u00a0Resolves to<\/span>\u00a0text box, choose the static IP address attached to your WordPress Multisite instance.<\/p>\n

        Choose the Save icon.<\/p>\n

        That is all you need to do. After the change propagates through the internet\u2019s DNS, the domain will redirect to the new blog site on your WordPress Multisite instance.<\/p>\n
